Import / Export Accountant In Canada

Accounting For Import – Export Business In Canada

At Bomcas Canada Accounting, we have discovered that many businesses enter the import-export sector without having the requisite background knowledge or experience. As a result, they have several challenges when it comes to maintaining their financial records and filing their tax returns with the Canada Revenue Administration (CRA). Import-export transactions are governed by a unique set of tax rules in each country, such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST/HST) in Canada, which is applicable to all transactions.

Businesses that import and export goods may be required to register for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) or the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). As a result, the following rules are in effect:

  • All taxable supplies manufactured in Canada must be charged to the customer and collected by the supplier before being remitted to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
  • They must file their GST/HST returns on a regular basis in order to avoid fines and interest charges.
  • They should be able to claim input tax credits (ITCs) in order to recoup the GST/HST that they have paid or that is due on the purchases that they have made in the past.

It is necessary for the importer or exporter to provide their GST/HST number on all invoices, receipts, and any other documentation that they require in order to be eligible for input tax credit reimbursement (ITCs). Additional copies of invoices, receipts, and other supporting paperwork should be kept on file by the importer or exporter in order to be able to claim input tax credits (ITCs) for the GST/HST that they have paid.

If you intend to import goods into Canada or export commodities to other countries, you must first establish a business account with the Canadian government’s import-export programme, which may be found here. This number will be used by the Customs and Revenue Agency while processing customs paperwork for your import-export programme account. Depending on whether you are importing or exporting products or services, you may have additional obligations to the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA), such as 1) reporting your shipments, 2) accounting for your commodities, 3) paying taxes, and 4) paying duty and customs fees.

Before customs release forms and other documents, such as invoices, can be processed, you must complete the RC1 – Request for a Business Number & Certain Program Accounts form, which must include all of the names of your company that may appear on customs release forms and other documents. If the name on the customs release certificate does not match the name on our records, your products may be held up at the border until the problem is resolved.

At Bomcas Canada Accounting, we have experience working with a wide range of import-export businesses, assisting them with the creation of financial statements, the filing of corporation taxes, and the submission of GST/HST forms, among other things. Our expertise includes not only managing their financial data, which is used to file corporate income tax returns as well as GST/HST returns, but we are also familiar with the import-export process, including their responsibilities as import-export businesses and the requirement to register for an import-export programme account with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). In the import-export industry, you may find yourself losing control of your accounting function. If this is the case, Bomcas Canada Accounting may aid you in recovering control over your accounting function.

It is recommended that you contact Bomcas Canada Accounting if you wish to start a business as an importer or exporter in Canada. You may entrust us with the accounting and tax aspects of your company, and we will take care of everything for you.
